Sonya Shikhman holds an Hon B.A. in both History and Law & Society from York University and received her LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School.

While at Osgoode, Ms. Shikhman participated in various appellate advocacy competitions winning a Distinguished Oralist Award in her first year. The following year Ms. Shikhman was one of the 4 people chosen to represent Osgoode Hall Law School at the Canadian rounds of the International Law Jessup Mooting Competition in Victoria, B.C. where Ms. Shikhman and her partner received an award for the best written memorial (argument) in Canada. In her third year Ms. Shikhman acted as a judge in the Undergraduate Appellate Advocacy competition administered by Osgoode Hall Law School.

Even in her early undergraduate studies Ms. Shikhman worked extensively with an experienced criminal defence lawyer in Toronto, gaining valuable exposure to criminal defence work at all levels of Court. Once in law school Ms. Shikhman continued to indulge her passionate interest in criminal law as a summer student with two prominent criminal defence firms in Toronto where she worked on cases ranging from minor violations to the most serious crimes in the Criminal Code.

Ms. Shikhman articled at Adler Bytensky Prutschi and joined the firm as an associate in 2007. Ms. Shikhman manages a large roster of cases spanning all areas of the Criminal Code while also being involved with significant work supporting complex cases lead by partners of the firm. Ms. Shikhman is fluent in Russian and proficient in Ukranian and is a frequent guest on the Russian television show, MIX TV, where she provides legal commentary on criminal law issues in the public eye. She has also worked on a number of high profile cases and developed an expertise in the area of impaired driving where several of her cases are cited as precedent and was admitted to the partnership in 2011.

In Jan. 2011, Ms. Shikhman participated as a Judge in the Ukrainian national rounds of the presitigious Jessup Moot.
