Mr. Prutschi discusses an important and substantial change to the Citizen’s Arrest and Self-Defence Act, which allows people to make arrests within a “reasonable” period of time after the offence was committed when it is not reasonable to wait for police intervention after the crime has been committed. This fundamental difference is that the previous definition meant that you could only make a citizen’s arrest if a criminal was caught red-handed. While the changes are important steps in expanding the scope and bounds of citizen’s arrest, the “reasonable” clause means that there are still limitations and individuals should be careful not to overstep their limited powers by conducting dangerous vigilante actions.
