Many people were stunned to hear that MGM Resorts would be suing the victims of the Las Vegas shooting. The shooter, Stephen Paddock, opened fire into a crowd of concertgoers from the Mandalay Bay hotel, which is owned by MGM Resorts. 58 people died as a result of the shooting with 851 additional people injured.
Victims and families of the victims are suing MGM Resorts stating the hotel did not have adequate security and allowed this to happen. MGM responded by suing back. Toronto criminal lawyer Ed Prutschi discussed this tactic, stating it’s not unusual. While the headlines are alarming, the hotel is not suing the victims for money. Rather, they are filing a suit so that they can control which court the trial will take place in.
Prutschi says the case will come down to whether the hotel upheld a reasonable standard of care similar to other hotels.
