The Intersection Between Family & Criminal Law

Criminal lawyer Edward Prutschi joined family lawyer Andrew Feldstein on Ask Andrew. The two discussed the various ways criminal and family law intersects. Ed Prutschi said that out of all of the different types of law, the one that criminal law most often overlaps with is family law. Domestic assault cases are the most common types of cases that cause the two to interact.

Both Edward Prutschi and Feldstein warned that what works in one court could end up harming you in the other. For example, if you’re going through a hard divorce and worry the other party may make false criminal charges, a criminal lawyer may suggest moving out or recording all interactions. However, those acts could look unfavorable in family court. The key is to have open communication between criminal and family lawyers.
